Why a Toowoomba specialist

Three things every Toowoomba drainage job has to get right.

Reactive black-soil clay.

Toowoomba and the Downs sit on some of Australia’s most reactive cracking clay, much of it classified Class E or P. It swells and shrinks 40 to 75mm with the seasons. Rigid stormwater pipe laid straight into that ground without proper gravel bedding cracks at the joints within a few years, and ag-drain slots clog with fine clay if they are not wrapped. We bed every line, wrap every subsoil drain in geotextile, and set the falls so seasonal movement never ponds water against your slab.

Storms off the Range.

At 690 metres on the lip of the Great Dividing Range, Toowoomba cops short, very intense storm cells that dump a month of rain in an hour. The 2011 and 2022 flash floods through East and West Creek are the extreme end, but every summer the same physics fills low points fast. A stormwater system sized for a gentle coastal drizzle simply overflows here. We size pipe and pits for the local rainfall intensity, not a generic figure.

A lawful point of discharge.

Under AS 3500.3 and the Queensland Plumbing and Wastewater Code, roof and surface water must reach a lawful discharge point: the street kerb and channel, a council stormwater pit, or an approved on-site system. It cannot be tipped onto the neighbour’s block, and a new tank tied to a development approval needs a Toowoomba Regional Council plumbing application and a compliance certificate. We confirm the legal discharge point before we dig, so the job certifies first time.
