Drainage in Kearneys Spring.

Kearneys Spring is established family suburbia on the southern side of Toowoomba, close to the university and full of mature trees. Those big trees are wonderful for the streetscape and merciless on old stormwater pipes, which is why a lot of our work here starts with a camera.

Why Kearneys Spring

The Kearneys Spring drainage story.

Mature trees, root-invaded drains.

Kearneys Spring has some of the leafiest streets in Toowoomba, and the downside of all those established trees is roots. They find any weeping joint in an old stormwater or sewer line and thrive on the moisture, until the line chokes and the gully overflows every storm. This suburb is where we do the most blocked-drain clearing with CCTV camera inspection: jet the line clear, then put a camera down to find exactly where the roots are getting in so we can fix the cause, not just clear the symptom.

Established homes, ageing connections.

Like much of southern Toowoomba, a good portion of Kearneys Spring housing is a few decades old, and the original stormwater connections are reaching the end of their life. Joints crack as the reactive clay moves, falls flatten as the ground settles, and silt builds up. Where a camera shows a line is past clearing, we re-lay the damaged section on proper gravel bedding so the clay movement does not just crack it again. Often we are also re-doing the downpipe connections at the same time.

Wet yards near the parkland.

Parts of Kearneys Spring sit low near the lake and parkland, and on the heavy clay those low yards hold water long after rain. A wrapped ag drain pulls the groundwater out, and a spoon drain or channel moves the surface water off the lawn to a lawful outlet.

Typical Kearneys Spring jobs.

  • Jetting and camera-inspecting root-invaded stormwater and sewer lines ($400-$1,200)
  • Replacing cracked sections of old clay-affected pipe
  • Re-connecting downpipes to proper stormwater lines and the kerb
  • Ag drains drying out low, wet yards near the parkland
  • Surface drains keeping water off paths and thresholds

A worked example.

A Kearneys Spring home with a stormwater gully overflowing every storm: jetting cleared a heavy root mass, the camera found the entry point at a cracked joint four metres in, and we replaced 1.5 metres of pipe with a properly bedded joint. $1,150 for the clear, camera and repair, and it has run clear since. To understand the cost of larger jobs see the Toowoomba drainage cost guide.
